Artist Spotlight: Jade Windell's Honeycomb Calcite Series

Not every piece at Sculpture in the Park is bronze. Jade Windell, a 12-year veteran of the show, is bringing new work carved from Honeycomb Calcite — a translucent stone sourced from Utah that glows with a warm, amber light when it catches the sun.

Why it stands out in a bronze-heavy show

Sculpture in the Park is best known for cast bronze — it's held in a town with two working bronze foundries, after all — but the juried show has always included work in stone, mixed media, and other materials. Windell's calcite pieces are a good reminder to slow down at the pieces that aren't bronze; the translucency of the stone reacts to daylight in a way cast metal simply can't.

Where to see it

Look for Windell's Honeycomb Calcite work during the show's public days — Saturday and Sunday of the second weekend in August — and note how the piece changes in direct sun versus overcast light. If you're going for the Friday Patron Party, the early-evening light is a particularly good time to catch the glow.
